We thank you in advance for taking the time to read what we plan to do in this coming year.
We have recently returned from a short term missions trip to Mozambique. Below we have included a short report of what we got up to :
Mid July 2008 our team of 13 students arrived in Quelimane where locals who would be helping us with our mission and the trip ahead met us. We partnered with a local church called Quelimane Christian Assembly, a growing city centre church that is also split up into cell groups in the surrounding rural areas. The city has a population of approximately 250,00 and is a port city with a real community atmosphere.
Half of our team was able to help the church paint a building they use each Sunday. The other half were then able to work in a school the church has set up in a rural community within the city. The “Peace School†as it is known teaches the kids the fundamental subjects they require from the age of 3 -15 as well as biblical/spiritual teaching and practical farming skills. Our team was able to help with the construction of another school building and paint some of the classrooms already in use. We served in any other way needed whilst in Quelimane through setting up church and visiting a boy’s home.
The second half of the trip we moved to the north of the country to a more rural village called Macouba. In Mocouba we stayed with a lady originally from South Africa called Bernadette who has set up a pre school and medical centre for the local community. Bernadette who has lived in Mozambique for twelve years has had real vision from God and has seen him bless her in so many ways. She started out living in a tent and now has developed her vision into a complex, which feeds the community on so many different levels. We helped with the digging of trenches for electrical lines, painting rooms, roofing newly constructed buildings and our main job of building an entrance gate with a guard hut for the safety of the complex. Bernadette is quoted as saying "you have done 5 months work in 3 days." One of our team members even fixed sewing machines used to teach local ladies various trades. This saved Bernadette a 5 hr trip to neighbouring Malawi to have the machines repaired. This made us extremely happy and made the trip all the more worthwhile.
Come September we have the opportunity to return to work in Mozambique for twelve weeks; six weeks alongside each project. The first half will be spent working with a local church; serving in a school and boys home. The remainder of the trip will be spent working with Bernadette in the classroom and wherever else needed.
We would greatly appreciate your prayers as we try to organise the practicalities of this short term missions trip. If you feel led to contribute financially to this worthy cause it would be greatly appreciated, as there are finances to be met with taking on a trip such as this. The money you contribute will go a long way in improving the lives of children in desperate circumstances, living in utter poverty.
